What are the goals of Ayurveda?
In a world flooded with wellness trends, the ancient science…
Yoga is an excellent after-school activity that can serve the dual purpose of offering physical activity while fostering character development and an improved sense of individuality and physicality. Unlike traditional sports, yoga circumvents the undue pressures and stress many children experience when challenged to compete with their peers or meet the expectations of over-exuberant teachers or coaches. Yoga offers a highly constructive alternative to traditional sports. It engages children on multiple levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – while jump-starting them on a positive journey of individuality, including self-image, self-discovery, and self-awareness.
According to research published recently by the National Center for Health Statistics, 12.3% of children and adolescents aged 4–17 years practiced yoga in 2022.
Many people mistakenly perceive yoga as a religious practice. It’s not. It’s a secular practice developed in ancient India to unify the body, mind, and spirit. It is an approach to physical exercise with the flexibility to allow participants to choose whether to augment it with mindfulness and meditation practices.
Introducing children to yoga early can significantly contribute to their overall development. It equips them with a unique skill set to navigate life and attain well-being as balanced adults. An early introduction to yoga can have long-lasting positive effects on your children’s physical and mental well-being, providing essential tools to face life’s challenges with resilience and balance.
In my yoga classes for children, I teach a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques adapted to suit children’s developmental stages and interests.
Children between the ages of 2 and 10 can participate in playful Yogic exercises to learn various postures. The poses are introduced through association with animal figures. More advanced practices are offered for those older than 10, incorporating breath control and concentration exercises into their routine.
